What is an American? What is the American ideology? I can only say what I think an American is. Americans are a diverse and ever changing people. They do not look like one another. They don’t act the same. They all have one thing in common.
They are citizens of a country that is like none other on earth. Americans believe people of entirely different cultures can live together in peace. We believe every person has the God given right to pursue individual happiness.
We believe that peoples of vastly diverse cultures can form laws to live by that respect each individual member of our society. We believe the primary restraint on our pursuit of individual happiness is respect for others in our society.
In America the poorest among us can reach for the stars and some even make it. In America fortunes can be gained or lost overnight. In America we tolerate the views of those who would even try to destroy us.
In America we have had an overwhelming number of citizens from every generation who have been willing to sacrifice their very life to protect and insure this same future for each others children. In America we believe in protecting those oppressed by the tyrants of the world when these people call on us and truth reveals the tyranny. The nation America was formed by peoples fleeing tyranny and oppression.
Sure, we have our differences in social matters such as abortion, Government sponsored health insurance etc. but we as a people united by the Bill Of Rights and the Constitution still scream to those who would oppress or destroy us “Don’t tread on me”.
If we fail to teach our younger generation the principle of the American heritage, we will fail them. The Bible tells us that without a vision the people perish. If we ever lose the vision of America, the land of the free, we will go the way of so many other peoples who have gone into obscurity. The first rule of any conqueror is to create division among the people. United we stand, divided we fall.
The one thing these terrorist cannot be allowed to do is create division among us. We can discuss, we can disagree but when it comes time to be counted we must stand side by side, Americans.
